patience |ˈpā sh əns|

noun

1. the quality of being patient, as the bearing of provocation, annoyance, misfortune, or pain, without complaint, loss of temper, irritation, or the like.

Over the past few months, I have had more opportunities presented to me than in the last 2 years combined. My hard work of volunteering my services and relying on little income has allowed me to branch out and meet so many wonderful people, in all industries and of all backgrounds. Through this process, I have learned that the patience of the last few years has paid off. At the same time, as more windows of opportunity open, many of them seem harder to reach. The ladder may take me two-thirds of the way to the window, but it does not get me to the window. So it leaves me in a precarious position. My only option is to go back down the ladder and do the work I need to get a bigger ladder. Eventually, a time will come when I can acquire that ladder and reach that window. It’s only a matter of time. It just takes patience. Patience is a virtue that is built up, as difficult as it may be.

Be patient and good things will come.

Friday: Blackhawks rally downtown, the start of the Crosstown classic, and Blues fest!

Saturday and Sunday, more crowded trains and buses for the Crosstown Classic and Blue fest, which means a good day for Chicago businesses and the busiest weekend in Chicago so far.

If you are more the intellectual type and want to get your reading on, check out the Printers Row book fair from 10am to 6pm, on Dearborn between Congress and Harrison – both Saturday and Sunday. A shout out to Dr. Antonio Morales-Pita who will be selling his wonderful book, Havana-Merida-Chicago, at the fair in booth 249.

The Alex Pane 5K run/walk is charity 5K event that I cofounded in 2008 along with Glenbard East High School teacher Ann Banfield. The event, in its third year coming in 2011, raises money for 21 year-old Alex Pane who up to June 4, 2010, has been waiting for a multi-organ transplant. He received the transplant on June 4th and has begun the recovery process. This event is meant to help the family pay their part of the medical bills for the operation that costs over $600,000. His medical bills average $100,000 annually and he has used $1.4 million of the $2 million lifetime cap on his state insurance coverage, a program established for people who are unable to get private health insurance.

The event started small in 2008 with participation of about 100 partipants and in 2009 around 160. The 2011 event hopes to have at least 300 participants run or walk in the community fundraiser. To learn more, visit www.alexpane5k.com.

The last 2 days, I have been working hard to get the communication infrastructure up and running for the Hike for Our Heroes volunteer network. After learning that trying to communicate via Facebook is not the most efficient production environment, I worked with Troy Yocum as well as my fellow volunteers Mike, Cheryl, Jean and Melissa to get us all up and running using our email addresses at drumhikevols.com on Google Apps.

Now that we are all setup, we are excited that we are planning a few large events for the drumhike. We will be hosting a benefit concert in Nashville, a benefit concert in Chicago, and the Nationwide Hike for Our Heroes Yard Sale for Military Families in Need. The Yard Sale will take place the weekend of August 6 – 8. All Americans are encouraged to participate by hosting a yard sale, bake sale or other fundraiser and donate the proceeds to Troy’s hike benefiting Soldier’s Angels.

Visit the Facebook event page to learn more!

We are looking for people to organize street wide yard sales for the National Hike For Our Heroes Yard Sale on Aug 6, 7 and/or 8th. If 15% of our followers step up to help and each raise $100 then we will raise over a million for Military Families!!! Mark your calendar and lets get ready to help Military Families in financial need!

Please make checks payable to:

Soldiers’ Angels
1792 East Washington Boulevard
Pasadena, CA 91104

Please notate checks to say “Hike” so we will account it to the Financial Aid program.

For more info please email:
Troy@followtroy.com

The dates of the other events are forthcoming but will be posted soon! Thank everyone for your support of Troy’s hike across America for military families in need!
