The Alex Pane 5K run/walk is charity 5K event that I cofounded in 2008 along with Glenbard East High School teacher Ann Banfield. The event, in its third year coming in 2011, raises money for 21 year-old Alex Pane who up to June 4, 2010, has been waiting for a multi-organ transplant. He received the transplant on June 4th and has begun the recovery process. This event is meant to help the family pay their part of the medical bills for the operation that costs over $600,000. His medical bills average $100,000 annually and he has used $1.4 million of the $2 million lifetime cap on his state insurance coverage, a program established for people who are unable to get private health insurance.

The event started small in 2008 with participation of about 100 partipants and in 2009 around 160. The 2011 event hopes to have at least 300 participants run or walk in the community fundraiser. To learn more, visit www.alexpane5k.com.
